Ethiopian Meal Plan for Weight Loss: A Sample Day and Lighter Dishes
You do not need foreign diet food to lose weight. Weight comes off when you eat a little less energy than you burn, day after day, and Ethiopian food can do that well: legume wots, vegetables and lean tibs are filling for their calories. What changes is how much injera, oil and butter go with them.

These lunch and dinner dishes have the fewest calories for their weight, so a full plate costs less. Pair them with a single injera.

Tips that make the biggest difference
- Count your injera. Each piece adds real calories; one with lunch and one with dinner is a good starting point.
- Go easy on oil and niter kibbeh. The same wot made with half the oil can save hundreds of calories.
- Choose tibs, fish or legume wots for protein; they keep you full for longer.
- Fill half the plate with gomen, atkilt or salad before adding the richer dishes.
- Watch sweet drinks and sugared tea and coffee: they add calories without filling you up.
This is general information, not medical advice. If you have diabetes, high blood pressure, kidney disease, are pregnant, or take regular medication, talk to a doctor or dietitian before changing how you eat.
